Roofing underlay is a crucial yet often overlooked component of a roof system. It serves as a secondary barrier against moisture, wind, and snow, helping to extend the life of the roof. Like most building materials, however, roofing underlay carries an environmental footprint that spans from production to disposal. As sustainability becomes a growing priority in the U.S. construction industry, it’s worth examining how different types of underlay affect the environment—and how homeowners, contractors, and manufacturers can make more responsible choices.
Materials and Manufacturing
Roofing underlays in the U.S. are typically made from synthetic membranes (such as polyethylene, polypropylene, or PVC), asphalt-saturated felt, or newer breathable composites. Each material type has its own environmental profile.
- Synthetic underlays are lightweight and durable, often lasting decades. However, they are derived from fossil fuels and require energy-intensive manufacturing. Their long lifespan can offset some of the initial carbon footprint, especially when they reduce the need for roof replacements.
- Asphalt-based underlays (felt or bitumen) rely heavily on petroleum products and can emit volatile compounds during production. On the other hand, they are robust and can sometimes be recycled into asphalt pavement.
- Breathable or “vapor-permeable” underlays are multilayered materials that allow moisture to escape while keeping water out. They are popular in modern roofing systems but can be difficult to separate and recycle due to their composite structure.
The environmental impact of production also depends on the energy source used. Underlays manufactured in facilities powered by renewable energy or using recycled polymers generally have a lower carbon footprint.
Transportation and Installation
Transportation contributes a smaller but still relevant share of the total environmental impact. Lightweight synthetic underlays reduce fuel consumption during shipping, and sourcing materials from regional manufacturers can further cut emissions.
During installation, waste can occur from trimming and fitting. Some U.S. manufacturers now offer take-back or recycling programs for offcuts, helping to reduce landfill waste and promote circular use of materials. Proper storage and handling on-site also minimize damage and unnecessary disposal.
Lifespan and Maintenance
The sustainability of a roofing underlay must be evaluated in relation to its service life. A product that lasts 40–50 years may be more environmentally sound than one that needs replacement after 15–20 years, even if it requires more energy to produce.
When properly installed, underlay requires little to no maintenance. It protects the roof deck from moisture damage, which in turn extends the lifespan of the entire roofing system. This durability reduces the need for repairs and replacements—saving both resources and emissions over time.
Recycling and Disposal
At the end of its life, roofing underlay often becomes part of mixed construction waste, which is typically landfilled or incinerated. This results in resource loss and greenhouse gas emissions.
However, recycling initiatives are emerging:
- Some synthetic underlays can be shredded and reused as raw material in new construction products.
- Asphalt-based underlays can be processed and reused in road construction.
- Research is underway into bio-based alternatives, such as underlays made from hemp, cellulose, or other renewable fibers, which could be composted or recycled more easily.
To make recycling feasible, better sorting practices on demolition sites and clear labeling of materials are essential. This allows recyclers to identify and process materials more efficiently.

The U.S. construction industry is moving toward more circular and low-carbon solutions, and roofing underlay is part of that shift. Future products are likely to be designed with recyclability, renewable content, and reduced emissions in mind.

- supporting manufacturers that use recycled or bio-based materials,
- and ensuring proper installation to maximize product lifespan.
